THE FAMOUS FIRST PRESBYTERIAN EGGS!
For the past 13 years First Presbyterian Church has made
chocolate-covered peanut butter and coconut candy Easter eggs, beginning
each year the week prior to Ash Wednesday and ending the week prior to
Holy Week. From a record high in 1998 of 65,250 eggs to the current 32,000-34,000
eggs each year this project is the major fundraiser of the Church Family. In addition to funding projects for the church (including
over $100,000 on the Fellowship Hall loan and funds for a post-disaster
shelter) the proceeds from the eggs have sent children to camp through
the Kernersville Police Department, supported the Buckle Bear Project
and fire-safety programs of the Kernersville Fire Dept., and supported
Crisis Control, as well as benefited the Kernersville Women’s Homeless
Shelter and Habitat for Humanity homes in the Kernersville area. One outgrowth of the egg-making project was the formation
of the PGA’s, the "Presbyterian Gad-Abouts," the senior-citizen organization
of First Presbyterian. Not only do many of the Church Family members help
make the eggs, others in the Kernersville community come each year to
work and enjoy the fellowship!
